François Mardirossian's album "Moondog: Musique pour Piano" is a classical recording released in 2020 that showcases the piano compositions of Moondog, the visionary American composer and musician. This CD features Mardirossian performing a diverse collection of Moondog's works, demonstrating the composer's unique ability to blend multiple musical traditions and aesthetics. The album spans various compositional styles including classical forms, minimalist approaches, and pieces inspired by American Indian rhythms and jazz elements, reflecting Moondog's characteristic fusion of contemporary and traditional musical languages. The recording captures the essence of Moondog's innovative approach to music, which anticipates the later minimalist movement and demonstrates his role as a bridge between different musical eras and cultures. Mardirossian's interpretations highlight Moondog's unconventional use of the piano, particularly his technique of playing the same notes simultaneously in both the highest registers to create a xylophone-like effect, contrasted with deeper, more traditional pianistic passages. This album serves as an important document of Moondog's compositional legacy, allowing listeners to experience the work of a composer who, despite his profound influence on minimalist composers like Philip Glass and Steve Reich, remained largely underrecognized during his lifetime. The collection illustrates why Moondog is increasingly recognized as a pivotal figure in twentieth-century music, whose boundary-crossing aesthetic continues to resonate with both classical purists and contemporary music enthusiasts.
